At Brad Morris Law Firm, PLLC, we fight hard every day for our clients. Last week, we celebrated an important victory when the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled in our favor. Their decision means that one of our most serious medical malpractice cases will move forward to trial.
What Happened
In 2018, a man named Shannon Reed went to the emergency room at a local hospital. He was having chest pain, trouble breathing, and numbness in his arm — signs that could mean a heart attack. The ER doctor ran some tests but later sent Shannon home. Sadly, just a few hours after leaving the hospital, Shannon passed away.
Shannon’s family believed that the hospital and the ER doctor did not give him the care he needed. They trusted Brad Morris Law Firm to help them seek justice.
The Fight in Court
The hospital, the ER doctor, and the emergency group tried to stop the case from moving forward. They said that, because the ER doctor didn’t have the power to admit Shannon to the hospital, they shouldn’t be blamed. They asked the court to dismiss the case before it ever got to a jury.
But we stood firm. We brought in expert doctors and nurses who explained all the ways the hospital and the doctor failed to take proper care of Shannon. They showed that even without admitting privileges, the ER doctor still could have done more. They also showed that mistakes were made in how the tests were read, how Shannon’s rising pain was handled, and how discharge instructions were given.

The Supreme Court’s Decision
The Mississippi Supreme Court agreed with us. In a unanimous decision, all the justices ruled that there were real problems with how Shannon’s care was handled — problems that a jury should hear about. They said the case could go forward to trial.
However, the Court did say one part of the case — the claim that the doctor should have admitted Shannon to the hospital — could not continue because of some special legal rules about admitting patients. But all the other important claims remain, and we are moving full speed ahead toward trial.
Why This Matters
This case is about more than one family’s tragedy. It’s about making sure hospitals and doctors are held responsible when they don’t meet the standards they are supposed to follow. It’s about making healthcare safer for everyone in Mississippi.
